Introduction

Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix and can progress to perforation, abscess and peritonitis. It needs urgent medical assessment; do not delay care while trying home remedies.

What appendix surgery is

Appendectomy removes the inflamed appendix under anaesthesia. It can be laparoscopic or open. If the appendix has burst, the surgeon also treats contamination or an abscess as clinically required.

Symptoms and when to seek help

  • Pain that often begins near the navel and moves to the lower right abdomen
  • Pain worsened by movement or coughing
  • Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting or fever
  • Children, older adults and pregnant patients may have less typical symptoms

Diagnostic process

Diagnosis combines symptom history, repeated abdominal examination, blood and urine tests, and sometimes pregnancy testing. Ultrasound or CT may be used because gastroenteritis, urinary stones and gynaecological conditions can resemble appendicitis.

Available treatment options

Surgery remains standard for many patients. Antibiotics alone may be considered in carefully selected uncomplicated cases, but symptoms can recur and later surgery may be needed. Abscesses may require antibiotics and image-guided drainage before interval decisions.

Why laparoscopy may or may not be appropriate

Keyhole surgery helps examine the abdomen and usually supports faster recovery. Open surgery may be safer with extensive infection, difficult access, instability or findings that require a larger incision.

Recovery expectations

Uncomplicated cases often recover quickly with early walking and gradual eating. Perforation, abscess or open surgery can mean a longer admission, antibiotics and slower return to normal activity.

Risks and limitations

  • Wound infection, abdominal abscess, bleeding or anaesthetic complications
  • Bowel injury, ileus, adhesions or later bowel obstruction
  • A normal-looking appendix may occasionally be found because no test is perfect
  • Antibiotic-only treatment carries a risk of recurrence

Before urgent surgery

Bring existing reports and tell the team when you last ate or drank, what medicines you use and whether pregnancy is possible. Do not delay emergency assessment to arrange an outpatient consultation. Fluids, pain relief and antibiotics may be started while the team evaluates you.

What happens on surgery day?

The team checks your identity, consent and planned procedure, reviews test results and inserts an intravenous line when required. You meet the anaesthesia team before going to theatre. After the operation, staff monitor pain, breathing, bleeding and your ability to drink and move safely.

Discharge includes medicine and wound instructions, a follow-up plan and advice on work, lifting and driving. If observation or further treatment is needed, the team explains why admission is safer.

Anaesthesia and expected hospital stay

Appendix removal generally needs general anaesthesia. Discharge after an uncomplicated operation can be early once you are stable and able to drink and move. A burst appendix, abscess, infection or bowel problem can require several days of treatment or longer.

Diet and return to normal activity

The team advises when to restart fluids and food according to bowel recovery. Increase walking gradually and follow restrictions on sport, lifting and driving. Attend follow-up and ask how pathology results will be shared. Do not ignore new fever, worsening pain or repeated vomiting after going home.

Emergency warning signs

  • Seek emergency assessment now for increasing abdominal pain—especially lower-right pain—with fever, vomiting, guarding, faintness or severe illness.
  • After surgery, urgent review is needed for worsening pain, repeated vomiting, abdominal swelling, high fever, breathing difficulty or wound discharge.

Seek immediate emergency assessment for severe symptoms. Do not wait for an online booking response.

Cost / Ayushman eligibility

There is no single price that applies to every patient. Consultation, investigations, the treatment or operation, anaesthesia, room category, medicines and the need for ICU or a longer stay can change the estimate. Ask reception for a written estimate after clinical assessment and clarify inclusions, exclusions and follow-up charges.

Anand Hospital lists an Ayushman Card facility. Eligibility, the hospital’s current empanelment for the relevant package, covered treatment and required authorisation must be checked before planned admission. A card alone does not confirm that every test or procedure is covered. Bring your card and identification, and ask the desk to explain any applicable charges.

Frequently asked questions

Can appendicitis wait until morning?

No. Suspected appendicitis needs urgent assessment because perforation risk increases with delay.

Can I eat before assessment?

If surgery may be needed, fasting may be required. Seek care promptly and follow the emergency team’s instructions.

Is the appendix necessary?

People generally live normally after appendectomy without special long-term dietary changes.
